Cornwall Energy hosted a seminar on 17 April where academic, government and industry representatives discussed the progress made so far on the government's flagship Electricity Market Reform (EMR) package. The event focussed on the next important steps that needed to be taken to see the EMR implemented.
The day went underway with a technical update by Jonathan Brearley from DECC and a presentation on the role of the system operator by Mark Ripley from National Grid. Gordon Mackerron from the University of Sussex gave a presentation on whether or not EMR can deliver new nuclear, Phil Burns of Frontier Economics addressed other technologies, and David Newbury from Imperial College London discussed how to make CfD FiTs work. Nigel Cornwall summarised themes and also highlighted issues for smaller generators and suppliers. Willy Rickett, former director general of energy at DECC, chaired debate in the morning and afternoon on what still needs to be completed for the EMR to work and who should be paying for the measures.

At a Cornwall Energy customer event held on 11 April members of the industry came to voice and discuss insights into the current state of the energy retail market. The event considered the proposals coming forward from Ofgem's Retail Market Review (RMR).
The various RMR consultations have now closed (with the exception of the liquidity proposals which close out on 8 May). The remedies, if implemented, should in Ofgem's view enhance effective consumer engagement in the retail energy markets, leading to greater and more effective competition. But not everyone is convinced, including many industry respondents large and small. Two speakers at our event, Professors Stephen Littlechild and Catherine Waddams, also took issue with elements of the proposals.
