  • Monday 11 August

    The government plays down reports it may give families £150 towards fuel bills, and it says any aid will be announced in the autumn Pre-Budget Report. Centrica is reportedly planning a £4bn cash sweetener for the government's stake in British Energy, but EDF is said to remain at least the government’s preferred suitor. Ofgem issues a regulatory impact assessment relating to a change to electricity cash-out prices, saying the Authority is minded to approve a new accounting methodology.   • Tuesday 12 August

    Scotland’s renewables policy comes under attack from business groups who challenge whether the 50% 2020 renewables target is achievable. The British Chamber of Commerce says UK businesses need help in dealing with energy companies. Crude falls again on fears of a prolonged US economic slump. read more of Tuesday 12 August...

  • Wednesday 13 August

    British Energy posts a sharp fall in first quarter 2008-09 adjusted EBIT due to lower nuclear output and higher costs. It also confirms takeover talks continue and reiterates its commitment to new nuclear build. Media reports suggest a decision on E.ON UK’s proposals for a new coal plant at Kingsnorth is unlikely before October. Opec are rumoured to be considering cutting back oil supplies at its September meeting in the wake of the fallback in the price of oil. read more of Wednesday 13 August...

  • Thursday 14 August

    The Bank of England governor says recent increases in retail gas and electricity prices will push inflation to 5% in the coming months. E.ON posts a 6% rise in first half adjusted EBIT, while profits at its UK operations fall 24% on lower retail margins and currency issues. Meanwhile, RWE reports an 8% drop in operating results for the first half on a weaker performance in energy trading, while RWE Npower figures are down 3% also on lower margins. read more of Thursday 14 August...

  • Friday 15 August

    International Power’s second 500MW unit at its Rugeley coal plant is offline following recommissioning problems with the cause under investigation. ConocoPhillips announces it has secured local consents for a new 800MW CHP plant at Teesside.   • New report on competitiveness of market for distributed generation

    In December 2007, a joint Ofgem/Berr Distributed Energy (DE) Consultation document was published on initial options for introducing greater flexibility to the market, regulatory, and licensing arrangements for distributed low-carbon electricity. In June 2008, Ofgem published the follow-up consultation on these proposals. The report is accompanied by a review conducted by Professor Stephen Littlechild and Nigel Cornwall on the state of competition in the offtake market, which seems to be in broadly good health.
