In a letter sent to European Council president Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission president Jose Barroso on Monday 20 February prime minister David Cameron and 11 of his counterparts from across Europe suggested priority areas for growth in the EU. The leaders said Europe must deliver on its commitment to establish a "genuine, efficient and effective internal market in energy by 2014." They noted energy interconnection should be enhanced to ensure security of supplies and said "urgent action is also needed […] to remove planning and regulatory barriers to investment in infrastructure to release the potential of the single market and support green growth and a low-emissions economy."
On Tuesday 21 February Southern Electric Power Distribution launched a £30mn low-carbon network project to "revolutionise" the way electricity is distributed and used in the future. The project, known as the new Thames Valley Vision, will support a range of low-carbon initiatives over the next five years to adapt the local power networks to support changing usage resulting from the growth in renewable energy generation and new technologies. The funding has been allocated by Ofgem through the Low-carbon Networks Fund to support projects on the distribution network.
